What is a CLEAR Alert, and when is it issued?

The Texas Department of Public Safety issued a “CLEAR Alert” as authorities scoured Austin for Camerina Trujilo Perez, a missing woman last spotted on Jan. 25 around 5 a.m., raising concerns for her safety.

But what is a CLEAR Alert and why was it issued?

The Texas Department of Public Safety established the CLEAR Alert, a Coordinated Law Enforcement Adult Rescue, in 2019 to bridge the gap between existing alerts for missing children (AMBER Alert) and senior citizens (Silver Alert). This notification system aids law enforcement in locating missing, kidnapped, or endangered adults, especially those facing immediate risk of harm or death.

Criteria needed for a CLEAR Alert

In order to issue a CLEAR alert, the following criteria must be met, according to DPS:

  • The missing individual falls within the age range of 18 to 64 years old.
  • An initial investigation confirmed that the adult is at immediate risk of physical harm or death, or their disappearance is involuntary, potentially involving abduction or kidnapping.
  • The request needs to be made within 72 hours of the adult’s vanishing.

CLEAR Alert legislation

The legislation for the alert was created in part to honor victims of violence, according to DPS.
